Documentary STYLE
My approach to wedding photography is rooted in documentary storytelling. Rather than directing every moment, I tend to act as a fly on the wall observing what naturally unfolds: quiet exchanges, unscripted laughter, and the subtle details that make the day uniquely yours.
Weddings are one of the rare times in life when everyone you love is in the same room at the same time. It’s absolute magic, and my goal is to capture that energy with honesty and care. No over-posed shots or contrived narratives — just inclusive, authentic storytelling that celebrates who you are and the people who mean the most to you.
With a background in the news industry, I’ve developed an instinct for anticipating moments set to unfold and an adeptness at responding quickly to what’s happening in real time. The details that might get lost in the blur of the day often become the photographs that mean the most years later.
At the same time, documentary doesn’t mean hands-off. When needed, I’ll gently guide you so that the photos still feel effortless while you look your best. My goal is always to produce images that feel authentic and unforced, yet elevated with thoughtful composition.
My greatest strength as a photographer and editor is the value I place on longevity. Yes, trends may fade, but honest photographs are timeless. My aim is to deliver images that evoke all the happiness, warmth, community and love you felt that day, so that you can relive the moments time after time through the years.

Timeless.
Nostalgic.
AUTHENTIC.

Memories preserved

What clients
are SAYING

Working with Kirsten for our wedding was such a wonderful experience. She was incredibly professional, attentive to every detail, and made us feel completely comfortable throughout the day.
We especially love how natural and candid the photos turned out! Nothing felt forced, just very organic and true to the moment! One of the things we appreciate the most is that she captured so many little details from the day that we didn’t even realize were happening at the time. Looking through the photos now truly feels like reliving the whole day!
It was a joy working with her, and we would wholeheartedly recommend Kirsten to any couple looking for a thoughtful and talented photographer.
Mirella & Jeroen

We cannot recommend Kirsten's wedding photography services highly enough. Kirsten was the most communicative, at-ease, hardworking photographer before, during, and after our wedding day. Our photos were edited and delivered in a timely fashion, and they turned out extraordinarily. We're looking forward to hiring her again!
Sarah & Eli

It was a joy working with Kirsten. Not only did our photos turn out beautiful and reflect us as a couple, but she made the process relaxing, comfortable, and fun. I would definitely recommend Kirsten for the quality of her work but also because she is a good human!

About me
Kirsten Nicolaisen

I’m Kirsten Nicolaisen, a Brooklyn-based photographer specializing in weddings, hospitality, travel, and documentary work. My photography blends vivid, candid scenes with quiet, sincere moments that evoke feelings of nostalgia and familiarity.
My love for documenting started early. I grew up in Southern California, and for as long as I can remember I’ve been trying to capture the world around me as I feel it. On family trips, I’d pretend the disposable Kodaks my mom bought me were video cameras so I could “document” our adventures (with narration). As a teenager with my first digital point-and-shoot, I became a regular at the CVS one-hour photo counter, printing stacks of images so I could cover my bedroom walls in memories of the people and moments I loved.
Prior to focusing on wedding photography, I spent years working in the news industry, where I learned to anticipate moments set to unfold and respond quickly to the reality in front of me. That experience shaped how I photograph weddings now: with an attentive eye, a steady presence, and a deep respect for authenticity.
Before moving to NYC, I spent eight years living in the Pacific Northwest, where time in nature became a constant source of inspiration. All the long hikes, rocky coastlines, and expansive landscapes that Oregon has to offer deepened my appreciation for light, atmosphere, and the feeling of being intensely alive in this world. That same appreciation for the natural world also led me to repeatedly walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain: a long-distance pilgrimage that has become an ongoing personal photography project. Traveling on foot through unfamiliar regions among unfamiliar faces has influenced how I see and photograph my surroundings: curiously, openly, and with empathy and wonder.
Wedding photography brings together everything I love about storytelling — people, emotion, movement, community, and love. I photograph weddings throughout New York City and the tri-state area, and I’m always happy to travel for celebrations and stories that feel like the right fit.
